Minneapolis—April 3, 2009 — Greater Lake Country Food Bank prepares to feed nearly 1000 low-income seniors for Easter. For 15 years, Hy Rosen, 84, executive director of the Greater Lake Country Food Bank, and his team of volunteers have been preparing and delivering Christmas and Easter meals to as many as 20 of Hennepin County’s subsidized senior living centers, feeding approximately 800 low-income seniors. This Easter, due to the dismal economy, Rosen and his volunteers are expecting to serve as many as 1000 low-income seniors on April 12.
“Low-income seniors are really struggling,” says Rosen. “They’re barely surviving on a fixed income while the cost of food, health care and medication triples. Many have no family locally and spend the holiday alone; they lack access to transportation as well as money to dine out. For these reasons, we’re bringing an Easter meal to them.”
Lisa Anderson, a board member with the food bank, has been preparing the Easter meals for the seniors for the past four years. She starts her day at 7 am preparing a menu that requires her to cook 600 lbs of turkey breast, 600 lbs of potatoes, and 600 lbs of mixed vegetables — which Rosen and his volunteers deliver and serve to seniors.
The prepared food is packaged in large, covered aluminum trays and placed in waiting cars. This year, approximately 80 volunteers from area synagogues will deliver meals to the 13 participating senior centers within Hennepin County and surrounding suburbs. The same volunteers will also serve the meals.
Volunteers will begin delivering the meals at 11 am from East Side Neighborhood Services located at 1700 2nd St. NE in Minneapolis; trips to the 13 participating senior centers will occur approximately every half hour. Easter meals will be served at the senior centers between 11:30 am and 2 pm.
